What makes a great Engineering Manager at iGrafx?

  • Lead by inspiration: Being the team lead isn’t about ordering people to do things. It’s about leading by example, providing clarity of vision, and inspiring people to fulfill the vision. Your job is to serve and support your team by providing them the right challenges and projects to help them grow in their careers while also contributing to the code base.
  • Humility, trust and respect: You are not afraid of hiring people who know more than you. One cannot know everything. You have the humility to accept that others might know something you don’t or be better at something than you are. A great manager welcomes that and trusts others to do the right thing. The manager provides clarity and a vision and trusts the team to get there. Something is wrong if you can’t trust your reports and have to micromanage them. A good manager cares about being trusted and respected rather than prioritizing being liked.
  • Caring: A great engineering manager cares about their employees and knows that their success is directly related to their team’s success. Leaders eat last.
  • Courageous and optimistic: You welcome new ideas and you know that a person who can’t make a mistake can’t make anything. You know that successful people don’t let good ideas wither on the vine. You also aren’t afraid of feedback. Feedback is a gift to help people be more successful. You are relentlessly optimistic while being realistic. You aren’t afraid to try new things and you believe they will be successful. When something isn’t successful, you have the courage to try again or try something else. Regardless, you and your team will reach the goals that are set.
